Sertão Veredas
Cerrado conservation combined with the generation of high-integrity carbon credits.
The REDD+ Sertão Veredas project is the first carbon project developed by a sugar-energy mill in the Brazilian Cerrado. Based at the Porto Cajueiro Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) and other areas belonging to Usina Coruripe in Januária (Minas Gerais), the initiative combines environmental conservation, the generation of certified carbon credits, and regional development.
Through the REDD+ methodology, it protects approximately 15,000 hectares of native vegetation in a region under pressure from deforestation. By avoiding emissions resulting from land-use change, it contributes to climate change mitigation and strengthens the conservation of one of the country’s most biodiverse biomes.
Located in northern Minas Gerais, the project supports the preservation of biodiversity, water resources, and other essential ecosystem services, reinforcing the Cerrado’s role in climate regulation and the conservation of Brazil’s natural heritage.
With the potential to generate approximately 72,000 carbon credits annually, the initiative expands opportunities for companies to advance their decarbonization strategies through credits destined for the voluntary market.
Reservas Votorantim is responsible for the technical structuring, certification process management, and origination of the carbon credits, in partnership with EQAO. Itaú Unibanco provides advisory services for the sale of the credits.
Transparency and Certification
Transparency is one of the pillars of REDD+ Sertão Veredas. The project is
registered with Verra the leading international certifier in the voluntary carbon
market where technical documentation, the certification process status, and
future credit issuances are available.
